Meeting, Materials Science & Technology 2018

Meeting, Materials Science & Technology 2018

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are being developed in a number of commercially relevant power generation applications, ranging from kilowatt-scale micro-combined heat and power systems to megawatt-scale utility power plants.  With demonstrated advantages of fuel flexibility, ultra-high efficiency and scalability, current work is focused on reducing cost, increasing lifetime, and improving reliability to enable commercialization in large markets.  Approaches being pursued include new fuel cell stack and system designs, lower temperature materials sets, and novel manufacturing techniques.  SOFC technology also is being developed to meet the demanding requirements of military applications, where lightweight systems, operation on high-sulfur military logistic fuels, and multiple startup/shutdown cycles are important.  This symposium will bring together experts in the field to address recent advances in solid oxide fuel cell technology.  Potential session topics will include:  (1) Advances ins SOFC Materials and Coatings; (2) SOFCs for Military and Aerospace Applications; (3) Progress on Low-Temperature SOFCs; and (4) NDE and QC Methods  for SOFC Manufacturing.
